INTRODUCTION:
This house was built as a kind of mini-mansion in 1928, The floors are divided between males on the lower floors and females on the upper floor, with the room on offer on the upper/female floor. We're in a micro-neighborhood... effectively surrounded by massive local institutions (UC East/Zoo/VAMC/CHMC), and because their security guards patrol the area so often and are always nearby, this makes us one of the safest areas in Cincinnati. Then UC East Campus shares a property boundary with the corner of our backyard, and we're directly behind the Pharmacy College, 200 yards to the shuttle stop, or 20 minute walk to McMicken Hall.
ABOUT THE CURRENT HOUSEMATES:
Current residents are a UC graduate from Mumbai, who now works as a software engineer North of town, then a recent UC grad and lab technician at Children's Hospital. We also have a school counselor who specializes in working with high school kids on their after school jobs programs. Admittedly they're also from New Jersey, but it's barely noticeable really, and mostly a non-issue. Then we have a local artist and Senior at Miami of Ohio. Lastly we have a woman from Germany moving in the end of this month, in her early thirties and works from home in data analytics, she was in the Tampa area but has been compelled to become a refugee from both the Florida climate and political climate.
FEATURES:
--- Utilities are $60 for everything up to and including HBO/Netflix/Hulu/Disney/ESPN. Perhaps our premier streaming media service though is Lingopie, effectively Netflix for studying languages in approaching 20 languages, with dual subtitles, flashcard, click to search for word meanings, the full complement of language learning in one web service.
--- Private half bath (showering is downstairs).
--- Private parking space.
--- Included Food: There's a lot of included food ingredients, see the list below.
--- Furnished like an AirBnB. The only room furnishing I don't ordinarily stock is bath towels, nor do I include flatscreens like many hotels (sorry).
--- Free Laundry, which includes laundry detergent and supplies (all household supplies are included, FYI).
--- Available room is the largest, third floor of the house, and at 400 square feet is larger than some apartment.
OTHER:
--- No deposit required. Written lease available, but not required.
--- The Cincinnati Zoo is incredibly close by, as in you can see the famous and historic dome of the Elephant House from our backyard. We've had a zoo-employed housemate living here, plus I have the platinum Zoo pass, in part so I can offer free guest admission to housemates and up to three of their friends. Bring the family!
--- Pets Stay Free: No deposits or monthly surcharge, and no pet application process.
--- Free Airport Pickup Available. Especially for people flying in from overseas.
ADDENDUM ONE OF THREE--- FOOD: (WHAT'S ON THE MENU).
...Bulk starches, got em. The lineup has been carefully adjusted over several years, and is likely to stay at-- popping corn, rice, mashed potato flakes, black beans, small elbow pasta, millet, grits, rolled oats.
...PBandJ sure, and it's real-sugar strawberry jam, but in addition to peanut butter (both creamy and super-chunk) there's also cashew and almond butter.
...Not coffee, coffee beans, and a dozen tea varieties. Other beverages chilling in the fridge include filtered alkaline water, iced tea and electrolyte beverages.
...A variety of cooking oils that also happen to provide a variety of fatty acids as now recommended. Not available anywhere else, possibly the UC cafeteria to some extent.
...Comprehensive cooking supplies means all of the half dozen varieties of vinegar, fifty spices and fifty spice mixes, none expired.
...Dairy whole milk, Vanilla Rice Milk, or Chocolate Almond Milk. I should mention here that one trick of mine for making this work is just before the sell-by date on milk I help use it up by making protein and peanut butter powder shakes with it. Also I'll eat a wrinkled green pepper, a softening banana at times, but we never have that problem with tomatoes. This would be the point of why there's food here, I could charge more for this, but it helps me out that the de facto 'leftover' food is free for my consumption.
...Bread is Dave's Killer Bread or equivalent (i.e. not Wonder Bread), numerous varieties, Paleo/Keto bread (very popular), and some dessert breads stored in the freezer(?), like chocolate chip vanilla brioche, apple strudel and raisin to be exact.
... I only have a few animal products included with free food, but they're the quite versatile milk, eggs, whipped cream cheese and spreadable butter.
... Water is a two-gallon reservoir on a stand, and the multi-stage filter includes a stage that adds minerals for taste and it has an alkaline stage to keep up with the latest trends.
... Produce and vegetables stocked constantly anymore, plus some nuts and seeds. Now that inflation has struck, this has proven to be the most popular amenity here apart from internet.
ADDENDUM TWO OF THREE: RECREATION UPGRADES During the pandemic I worked overtime on stuff people can do at or from home.
... BOCCE AND LIGHT-UP NIGHTTIME BOCCE: We have both versions currently, and a choice of several terrific long stretches to play.
... WII SYSTEM WITH OVER ONE HUNDRED GAMES: I researched lists of their best games to check against thrift store inventory. For their balance board I bought the best games optimized for it, drumsticks as music programs use it as a drum set, and a selection of the better fitness games including both Yoga and Pilates. Truly 'tis "The House of Wii" in here, but note for this listing the whole setup is moving to a new basement den, and is not 'fully operational' at this time to play Lego Star Wars, or similar.
... AIR HOCKEY PING PONG AND FOOSBALL: I finished out the back of the living room with 'recreational-level' (versus official/tournament sized) tables of all three. Note that air hockey and ping pong are a ‘topper’ table with a dining table tablecloth and wood folding chairs too.
... BOARD GAMES: Direct from the thrift store to you, there's Stratego, Battleship, Chess, Checkers, Playing Cards, Backgammon, 'Go' and Scrabble. Part of the reason for setting up a basement den as noted above is to have a place where they can be played, plus I'm putting a flat bench and some dumbbells in there to go with the rowing machine. For games though, the forerunner of checkers is called 'AlQuerque' and there are hundred of variants, similar to how we have Mancala so we actually have hundreds of Mancala variants. It's a project to complement my one mastered digital gaming experience with Wii by having a dual encyclopedic reference guide and such for these two ancient analog games, from Africa and the Middle East but also with variants originating in cultures as varied as South America to Siberia.
... ROWING MACHINE: It's set up in front of a flatscreen that offers the same Neflix/Hulu/Disney/ESPN while you work out.
... DVD COLLECTION WITH OVER 3,000 TITLES: I used to shop at thrift stores like Goodwill a great deal, and it kind of snowballed. Also I'd heard that multiplying streaming media outlets would lead to worse movies for everybody, and now this collection compares great to what's new on Netflix.
... BIRD WATCHING (HUMMINGBIRDS ESPECIALLY): I buy the cheapest 'basic' wild bird food blend because I have four feeders and local birds attack it all Spring and Summer, though we're on a bird-flu semi-hiatus from seed-fed birds, which is a lot of hyphens I know. But I buy the most expensive clear nectar that's infused with wildflower essence to attract hummingbirds to our three feeders, and they're just arriving now. You'll see a literal charm of dozens per day as they migrate North starting April/May, then South in August/September. Plus there's mirror film on the windows at their feeders so you can observe them in flight from under a foot away, even photograph them at times from that close.
... BASKETBALL: Three sizes of basketballs, hoop is height-adjustable and has been leveled sufficient for a rough driveway lane. Also FYI, it's easy to say we have football because we have one in the foyer supply closet, but we have a Nerf football plus an NFL replica ball complete with kicking tee, then for soccer it's just a neon green 'squishy' practice ball that's geared toward both youth and adults. Finally, we have nighttime light-up versions of all three, football, basketball and soccer.
... PRIVATE RECREATION AREA IN INDIANA: I inherited this place, three acres right on Laughery Creek an hour away on I-74. Primitive camping, canoeing, some modest fishing opportunities.
--- ADDENDUM THREE OF THREE: CARBON SIGNATURE MITIGATION:
In addition to being much cheaper, it lowers a your annual carbon tonnage a lot to double/triple/quadruple up in your housing, by at least a third reduced price and carbon footprint both. Then for the voracious reader, as one might be wondering just how this place could be so cheap, it's because we have added bedroom space in the (improved) basement. So it reduces your share of fixed carbon emissions even more, plus the basement bedrooms make this place much cheaper. And the tiny household recreation area described just above, it sequesters over ten tons of carbon per year. Long story short (and again too late), according to the people who trade carbon credits and debits, my carbon footprint as the live-in Leaseholder here, it would go negative if I got rid of my car.
